The Oshkosh Winnebagoland Barbershop Chorus took first place in the Packerland Division of the Land O’Lakes District Barbershop Competition held in Appleton on May 18, 2013. This represents the third time in the past five years that the local chorus has taken the honors. The chorus also took the Plateau AA Championship for chapters having between 40-75 members. In addition to Oshkosh, other choruses competing included Appleton, Stevens Point, Manitowoc, Plymouth, Green Bay, and Escanaba, Michigan.
The chorus is directed by Todd Oxley, with Craig LaPoint as the assistant director. For the fifth consecutive year, the chorus has qualified for Land O’ Lakes District competition, which this year will be held in La Crosse, Wisconsin in October. The Land O’ Lakes District includes all of Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and three provinces of Canada. The Oshkosh chorus is an elite chorus in the Land O’ Lakes District having placed 6th in competition last year and 5th in 2011.
In the quartet competition, local participants, “Perfect Timing,” a senior’s group, placed 1st, and “Westhaven,” competing for their first time, was the novice winner.
The Winnebagoland Barbershop Chorus will be active this summer singing in designated Oshkosh churches June 2 and June 30, and will perform in Berlin churches on August 11. The chorus will be featured performers at the EAA International Fly-In on July 30. In addition, they will be the preliminary act for the “Kids from Wisconsin” at the Leach Amphitheater on August 18, and will sing the National Anthem at the Timberattler’s baseball game on August 28.
