The Oshkosh Winnebagoland Barbershop Chorus, under the direction of Todd Oxley, and chapter quartets performed well at the Packerland Division competition held in Green Bay on May 21 and also at that Land O’ Lakes District (LOL) contest held in Rochester, Minnesota on October 22.
At the division level, the Oshkosh chorus, competing with groups from Appleton, Manitowoc, Stevens Point, Plymouth, Ripon and Wausau, took 2nd place and qualified for LOL District competition.
In the quartet competition, several groups with Oshkosh connections performed. “The Cheery-O’s” won the contest and “Perfect Timing” was 3rd. “One Button Short” came in 4th and took the novice championship. All three quartets earned the right to compete at the district level. “Rooftop Rhythm,” another quartet with Oshkosh members, competed in the Division 1 contest. They were crowned champions and qualified for the district.
At the LOL District contest, the Winnebagoland Barbershop Chorus was one of 17 participating choruses that included groups from Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. Each chorus earned the right to compete in the contest by achieving qualifying scores at their respective division contests. The Oshkosh chorus, all decked out in their new black tuxedos with red shirts and gray bow ties, received an excellent response from the audience as they performed their contest set: “All Dressed up with a Broken Heart,” and “If You Were the Only Girl in the World.” Competing against the best choruses in the district, Oshkosh took a very respectable 7th place, the best finish of any chorus from the Packerland Division.
In the LOL District quartet competition, two quartets with Oshkosh ties made the finals. “Rooftop Rhythm” were 3rd place medalists and “The Cheery-O’s” took 8th place. Making the semifinals were “Perfect Timing” and “One Button Short.”
